Any person who has been convicted of a felony and has not had their civil rights legally restored, or has been legally declared as insane or mentally incompetent, is not entitled to register to vote.

How to Register

If you meet the registration qualifications, you may submit a Voter Registration Application to the Lyon County Clerk/Treasurer’s office.  Your application cannot be processed and you will not be registered as a Nevada voter until you furnish all of the following required information:

  • Name (First and Last)
  • Lyon County residential address
    • Do not list a post office box unless it is being entered in block #4 (mailing address)
    • Do not list your business address unless you actually live there
  • Date of birth
  • Identification number, such as a:
    • Social Security Number
    • Nevada Driver’s License number
    • Nevada Identification Card number
  • Party affiliation
  • Signature

A new voter registrant is mailed a Voter Registration Card within 2-3 weeks after their application has been processed.  Your Voter Registration Card contains important information such as your name, residential address, mailing address, party affiliation and precinct number.  Sign the back when you receive it in the mail and remember to take it with you to the polls at election time.

Where to Get an Application

Registration may be done in person at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Justice Courts, and the Lyon County Clerk/Treasurer’s Office.  Voter Registration Applications are available from the following locations:

  • Lyon County Clerk/Treasurer’s Office
    27 S. Main Street
    Yerington, NV  89447
Monday – Friday: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • By Mail – If requested, the Clerk/Treasurer’s Office can mail you an application
  • Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or some state agencies

Registration Procedures for Military Personnel and Overseas Residents

We strongly recommend military personnel and their dependents who are temporarily living outside of Nevada, and Lyon County residents temporarily living overseas, to complete and submit a “Registration and Absentee Ballot Request – Federal Post Card Application” (FPCA) instead of the standard Voter Registration Application.  The FPCA is a Voter Registration Application and Absent Ballot Request in one.  It eliminates the need to submit these items separately.  Contact your Commanding Officer for the FPCA form.

Voter Registration Cards

Voter Registration Cards are non-forwardable mail, so if the post office returns your card to our office as “undeliverable” or indicating you have moved, your registration may become inactive.

A new voter registrant is mailed a Voter Registration Card within 2-3 weeks after their application has been processed.  A new Voter Registration Card will be sent if your polling place or precinct is changed.  If you have not received a Voter Registration Card or if you’ve lost your card and would like a replacement, call (775) 463-6501 or (775) 577-5033.

Your Voter Registration Card contains important information such as your name, residential address, mailing address, party affiliation and precinct number.  Sign the back when you receive it in the mail and remember to take it with you to the polls at election time.

Keeping Your Voter Registration Current

In order to vote in a primary or general election, your registration must be received in either of the following ways:
1)  A personal visit to our office no later than the third Tuesday before the election, or
2)  In any other legal manner providing that the registration is received by our office or postmarked no later than the fifth Saturday before the election.

When you move, change your name or political party, notify our office as soon as possible so that we can mail you a new voter registration application. Nevada law requires your notification to contain your handwritten signature (either by letter or on your Voter Registration Application). Telephone notifications will not be accepted.

Inactive Voter Registration

If the post office returns your Voter Registration Card, sample ballot or voter registration related correspondence to our office, as "undeliverable" or indicating that you have moved, you will be sent a forwardable notice advising you to update your address with the Election Department. If you fail to do so within 30 days, your voter registration will be inactivated. If you inform us that you have moved outside of Lyon County, your registration will be cancelled.

If your registration is made inactive, we will stop mailing you election related materials, such as sample ballots. You may still vote in your precinct of record, but you will be asked to complete and sign paperwork confirming your address. If you go to any other precinct to vote on election day, you will be instructed to return to the polling place where you can vote in your precinct of record.

To be registered as a current voter in Lyon County, please fill out a new voter registration application form with your new physical and mailing address.
