Lyon County to Hold a Special Election July 23, 2024 for Fernley City Council Ward 5 and Stagecoach GID Trustees
Yerington, Nevada – On Wednesday, June 5, 2024, the Third Judicial District Court of the State of Nevada ordered the June 2024 Primary Election for Fernley City Council Ward 5 and Stagecoach General Improvement District (GID) Trustees as void following a hearing on Friday afternoon to address errors on the Lyon County 2024 Primary Election ballots regarding the number of candidates to vote for in the two races. The Lyon County Clerk shall not release, review nor publish the results for the 2024 Primary Election for those two races.
Further, the Court ordered the Lyon County Clerk’s Office to hold a special election for Fernley City Council Ward 5 and Stagecoach GID Trustees on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. Early voting for both races will be held on Saturday, July 20 and Monday, July 22, 2024. Mail in voting and voting through Nevada’s Effective Absentee System for Elections (EASE) for the special election will be conducted in accordance with Nevada law.
For the Fernley City Council Ward 5, the ballot will state “Vote for One” and the Stagecoach GID Trustees race will state “Vote for Three.”

Lyon County 2024 Primary Election Update
Yerington, Nevada – Lyon County Clerk Treasurer Staci Lindberg, by and through Lyon County District Attorney Stephen B. Rye, filed a court action in the Third Judicial District Court on Thursday, May 23, 2024 seeking authorization to allow the Lyon County Clerk to:
· Correct the ballots for the 2024 Lyon County Primary Election for the Fernley City Council Ward 5 and the Stagecoach General Improvement District Trustees and;
· To conduct a Special Primary Election for those two races.
The Lyon County Clerk has requested that an expedited hearing be scheduled for the District Court to consider the Clerk's requests. A hearing date has not yet been scheduled.
The 2024 Lyon County Primary Election is proceeding as required for all races and the error will not affect any other candidates or races within Lyon County. Early voting and mail-in ballots are underway. Election Day is June 11, 2024. Polling locations for early voting and Election Day, and drop off locations for mail ballots are available on the elections page of the Lyon County website.
Initial Statement Released May 22, 2024:
Yerington, Nevada – Lyon County and the Nevada Secretary of State are aware of the error on the 2024 Lyon County primary ballot regarding the number of candidates to vote for in the Fernley City Council Ward 5 and the Stagecoach General Improvement District Trustees races. Lyon County and the Secretary of State's Office are working through these issues and will have additional information for the candidates and voters by the end of this week.
Lyon County and the Secretary of State's Office want to assure voters that this does not impact the remaining items on the ballot for the 2024 primary election.
