Report Sexual Misconduct

The Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 was enacted by Congress to address the problem of sexual abuse and rape in jails and prisons across the United States. In 2009 the final report was handed over to the U.S. Attorney General and PREA was published on June 20, 2012. The final published act of PREA gives correctional facilities standards to prevent, detect, monitor and respond to reported acts of sexual abuse of detained and incarcerated persons.

The Lyon County Detention Facility is a ZERO tolerance facility when it comes to sexual assault and abuse against persons in our custody. We observe all standards set forth and established in PREA. We believe that all inmates have the absolute right to be free from all and any sexual abuse. PREA covers all types of sexual abuse and assault, and all reports will be taken with the same level of seriousness and thoroughly investigated.

The claim or allegation does not have to come from the inmate; it may come from the members of the public such as a friend, family member or loved one. Please inform a Lyon County staff member if you are aware or suspect any possible misconduct. All staff members have been trained on how to properly and professionally investigate and report claims and allegations of sexual abuse. The telephone number for reporting Sexual Misconduct is (775) 463-6600. There is a message line where you can leave a message detailing any concerns you have. When leaving a message, please include, at a minimum, the inmate’s name and booking number to help us identify them so we can ensure they are treated appropriately. You may remain anonymous or leave your name and phone number so someone can call you back.
